Visitation will be held Friday, January 31, 2020 at Jackson - Highley Funeral Home Chapel, West Helena, Arkansas from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Tucker Grove Baptist Church, Poplar Grove, Arkansas at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow immediately at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Poplar Grove, Arkansas.
Robert Thomas Sims was born to the late Ernest and Joanna Sims, Sr. on April 15, 1940 in Poplar Grove, Arkansas. He departed this earthly life January 26, 2020 in the comforts of his own home surrounded by his loving family.
Robert accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age at Tucker Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Poplar Grove, Arkansas. He later joined St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, Helena Arkansas under the leadership of Reverend Washington. There he served on the Deacon Board as well as being an active church member. Robert rejoined Tucker Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend McCoy. Once again, he was a dutiful member; serving on the Deacon Board until his health began to fail.
Robert received his formal education within the Marvell School District. Throughout his school years, he demonstrated his sportsmanship by playing on the school’s basketball teams. He went on to graduate from Marvell High School, Marvell Arkansas.
After graduation, Robert explored various employment opportunities. He was employed at Riceland Food for 32 years. His love for farming influenced him to become a self-employed farmer. He also enjoyed fishing and sports.
Robert married his soulmate, Dorothy “Doris” Carruth on September 7, 1965. God blessed them with 54 years of martial bliss and five adoring children; Jacqueline, Darryl, Charlotte, Edwin, and Wanda. He truly was a devoted husband and father.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents; Ernest and Joanna Sims, a daughter; Jacqueline Wilson, siblings; Carnell, Henry, Ernest Sims, Jr., and mother-in-law; Mattie Butler Weaver.
Robert leaves to cherish his devoted and loving wife; Dorothy Sims, a special grandson; DeKevious Wilson of Chicago IL, children; Donna Sims of St. Louis MO, Alonda Sims, Velencio Sims both of California, Patricia Sims of Chicago IL, Darryl Sims, Charlotte Milligan, Edwin Sims, Wanda Sims all of West Helena AR, Anita (Michael) Hoskins of Southaven MS, three brothers; Franklin Sims, William (Jataundalyn) Sims, Willie B. Sims all of Poplar Grove AR, six sisters; Doshie Saver of Portland OR, Josia Butler, Bobbie (Ervis) Thomas both of Tucson AZ, Betty Sims of Long Beach CA, Zina Carruth of Cabot AR, Ella Sims of Compton CA, twenty-two grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, two Godchildren; Addie Minor, Nakayla Cornelious both of Helena AR and a host of beloved relatives and friends.
