Visitation will be held Thursday, May 7, 2026 at Jackson - Highley Funeral Home Chapel from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held Friday, May 8, 2026 at New Light Missionary Baptist Church, Helena Arkansas at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow immediately at Springlake Cemetery, Lexa Arkansas. Ms. Hunt's service may be viewed live through ZOOM.

Bessie Lee Hunt, a remarkable matriarch, entered this world on August 3,1959, in Lexa, Arkansas, as the cherished daughter of Bobbie Jean Hunt and Henry Banks. Her life was a testament to unwavering love, boundless generosity, and a radiant spirit that touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. From her earliest days, Bessie embodied resilience, determination, and compassion, qualities that indubitably illuminated the lives of those around her.
Bessie’s Christian journey began at a young age at the Star of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Poplar Grove, Arkansas. This early connection to her faith laid the groundwork for a life dedicated to service and love. As her journey continued, she joined New Light Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained a member until her passing. Her faith was a cornerstone of her identity, guiding her through life’s challenges and joys.
A proud alumna of Central High School, class of 1977, Bessie furthered her education at Phillips County Community College in Helena, Arkansas. Her professional journey led her to a distinguished career in managing office operations at Teach For America, where she served with unparalleled dedication for over 29 years. As the longest-serving employee, her profound impact was commemorated when Teach For America honored her by naming a building the Bessie Hunt Education Center in December 2014, a fitting tribute to her commitment and service.
Above all else, Bessie’s heart belonged to her family. She was an extraordinary and devoted mother to LaToya Hunt and Jeffery Hunt, who were the very essence of her joy. Her selflessness knew no bounds, as she consistently put her children’s needs before her own, embodying the spirit of making a way out of no way. Her unbreakable bond with her siblings and close friends was a testament to her enduring love and loyalty. Bessie’s legacy of love, resilience, and compassion continues to thrive within her family, who carry her spirit forward.
Bessie was a genuine soul, known for her candid honesty, infectious humor, and unwavering generosity. Her strength and perseverance were evident in every facet of her life, and she cherished each moment to the fullest. Outside of her professional achievements, Bessie found joy in cooking, socializing, and offering relentless support to others. Her vibrant laughter, gentle wisdom, and unwavering presence in times of need are fondly remembered by those who knew her.
On April 21, 2026, Bessie Lee Hunt departed this earthly life. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Bobbie Jean Wilborn Hunt and Henry Banks; her grandparents, Steve Wilborn and Emma Wilborn; her brothers James, Tommy, and Henry Hunt; her sisters Nancy Williams and Barbara Banks; and her brother-in law Roosevelt Williams, Sr. Her legacy is carried forward by her devoted children, LaToya Hunt and Jeffery Hunt; five cherished grandchildren: Precious Hunt, Kia Hunt, Ashton Hunt-Smith, McKenzie Hunt, and Kharingtyn Hill; and five adored great-grandchildren: Royce Carter Hunt, Aubri Hunt-Smith, Chadrick Ontria Johnson, II, Ivy Brooke Johnson, and Ryleigh Hunt-Smith. She is also survived by three brothers, Harry (Velma) Hunt, Dennis (Sandra) Griffin, AC (Mary) Banks, all of Milwaukee, WI, James Banks of Kansas City, MO, Walter Banks of Detroit, MI; three sisters, Emma Johnson, of Milwaukee, WI, Dorothy Capeheart of New York, and Glorie Jean Banks of Kansas City, MO; one surviving sister-in-law Martha (Tommy) Hunt of West Helena, AR; extended family Cora Blakely, Adrian Yarbrough, and Alysia Blakely, all of West Helena, AR; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Bessie’s departure leaves an indelible void in our hearts, yet we find solace in knowing her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. Her legacy of love and strength endures, shining brightly through the lives she touched. Her life, rooted in faith and family, remains a symbol of hope and inspiration for all who cherished her.
