It gives us great honor to reflect on our mother’s life journey. To begin, Darlene Walker was born on September 5, 1962, in Helena, Arkansas to James Henry Larry, Sr. and Leavor Toney Larry. Darlene confessed Christ as her Savior at Pleasant Joy Missionary Baptist Church of Helena-West Helena, Arkansas under the pastorate of Reverend C.B. Bingham.

Darlene was a proud “Class of 1980” graduate of Central High School in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas. Shortly after she graduated high school, Darlene acquired her cosmetology license at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas. That is correct! Our mom was licensed to do hair. So naturally, she began doing hair out of her house on a regular.

She married Jerry L. Walker on March 14, 1982. Three children were created within their union: Dominique L. Walker, Jerry L. Walker, Jr., and Jessica L. Walker.

Not only was she a licensed beautician, but Darlene was also a Certified Nursing Assistant and Certified Chef. Darlene’s career path began in 1985 when she was a cook for Sunny’s. She also worked at the Crestpark Nursing Home, and then Kelly’s Restaurant. She worked at Lady Luck, which was rebranded into the Isle of Capri Casino, many years later. Sirmeteria Walker worked at the Corner Market and lastly, the Helena Regional Medical Center, where she was the supervisor of the kitchen.

Because of Darlene’s genuine love for people and being a master chef, she gained much respect and love from Helena-West Helena residents and beyond. Darlene loved creating. Learning new techniques and creations from Pinterest was her thing!

There is nothing that our mom couldn’t create. She won many decorating contests for various holidays. She created masks during the thick of COVID. She created ribbons, just to name a few of her creations.

Sirmeteria departed this Earth and received her wings, on Sunday, May 19, 2024. She is preceded in death by her parents: James and Leavor Larry, Sr., her son: Jerry Walker, Jr., maternal grandparents: James and Minnie Robertson, paternal grandparents: Eddie and Leanner Larry, two sisters: Pearlie Mae Larry, Jeannette Larry Beale, two brothers: James H. Larry, Jr., Lawrence Larry, three brothers-in-law: Troy Collins, Willie Doyle, Fred Calvin, and one nephew: Cedric Larry.

Those left to cherish her memories include her children; Dominique Walker of Forrest City AR, and Jessica Walker of Horn Lake MS, husband; Jerry Walker of West Helena AR; one brother: Earnest (Grace) Larry of Helena-West Helena AR, five sisters; Ruthie Collins of Indianapolis IN, Geannette Doyle, Carol Thornton, both of Helena-West Helena AR, Minnie (Kevin) Washington of Sherwood AR, Deborah Calvin of Conway AR; three sisters-in-law; Dorothy Martin, Gwen Larry, Shirley Larry, all of Helena-West Helena AR; six grandchildren; Su’Maiyah Walker (17), Sa’Naa Walker (3), Sha’Mia Walker (6 months), Javien Hudson (13), Jordan Hudson (12), Jaxton Williams (6); and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and beloved friends.
