Martha Rivers was the eldest child of 5 children, born September 28, 1927 to Mr. Toney Rivers and Mrs. Julia Randle-Rivers in Bolivar County, Mississippi. She developed a relationship with Christ at an early age and attended First Baptist Church in Oneida, Arkansas.
At the age of 7 Martha and her siblings lost their mother, so she cared for her four siblings and throughout her life she took a lot of pride in raising her brothers and sisters.
Martha joined David Whittington in holy matrimony on November 9th 1947, in Coahoma County, Mississippi and to this union six children were born, Everlean Whittington of West Memphis, AR; Julia Whittington of West Memphis, AR; Toney Whittington of Grand Rapids, MI; Matthew Whittington of Memphis, TN; Otha Whittington of Grand Rapids, MI; and Salome Whittington-Mosley of Grand Rapids, MI.
She preceded in death her parents Toney and Julia Rivers, her sister Bernice Gill, her sister Gladys Rivers and her brother Ike Rivers.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her brother Toney Rivers, Jr. of West Memphis, AR; her 6 children, 24 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends.
REMEMBERING TOGETHER
Memories & condolences
Dear Rivers & Whittington Families, Mother Martha is greatly missed. She was the Mother of all Moms to me and my children and the children in her neighborhood. Mother Martha had a great heart and spirit. She was a good teacher of many popular subjects. I learned much about cooking, taking care of home and being a good wife and in-law to the Whittington family. She will never be forgotten. Mother Martha always encouraged me to not worry and not take the wrongs done to me, to heart. Live and let-live; forgive and be forgiven. Life is precious and so are the many friendships/relationships you have with family and friends. The Lord has received another ANGEL. a.k.a. Nandi Whittington
